Hawaii Travel Restrictions

Posted on: July 7, 2021

The Hawaiian landscape is unique in the fact that it has something for everyone. Daring landscapes with room for adventure and relaxation are just a few of the reasons why people frequent this little slice of paradise. We, of course, are partial to Maui. And now, with the pandemic slowly inching its way into our rearview mirror, it’s time to head back to the beach!

If you’re worried about the various restrictions surrounding travel, we at the Pauli Family Condos at Wailea Ekahi Village want to ease your worries and help you understand what you will need to do before sinking your toes into the sand. Hawaiian restrictions, airline restrictions and CDC recommendations are just a few of the things to consider when booking your travel.

Hawaiian Restrictions

The Hawaiian Islands have instituted their own pandemic policies since the restrictions on travel began. Current policies have recently been modified to ease some of the earlier processes that were implemented. As of July 8th, fully vaccinated travelers can skip the pre-travel COVID-19 test. It is important to note that you will need to upload your vaccination records to the state’s Safe Travels website and arrive with a hard copy. Otherwise, you can bypass the 10-day quarantine when arriving to the islands by having a negative COVID-19 test result from a trusted testing partner before your departure from home.

Additionally, as of June 15, 2021, inter-county travel restrictions have been lowered and travelers no longer need to have a COVID-19 test or quarantine while traveling between islands. This simply means that you may travel between the islands without retesting. For more information and updates on travel restrictions, the COVID-19 Hawaii Portal and the Hawaii Tourism Authority are great resources.

Canadian Restrictions

If you’re from Canada and are ready to feel the warm sand under your feet and the breeze in your hair, you’re in luck! Current travel restrictions from Canada to Hawaii allow for immediate travel following a negative COVID-19 test. The test must be taken within 72 hours of travel from a trusted lab identified by Air Canada or WestJet. Looking for more information? Here is everything you need to know about Canadian travel requirements including visas and passports.

Airline Restrictions

Airline have worked hard to make sure you can say Aloha this year! All major airlines that travel to the islands require passengers aged 2 and older to wear a mask. This includes wearing a mask in waiting areas, when approaching airline counters and in-between eating and drinking. Many airlines have also implemented relaxed policies when it comes to changing and cancelling your flight. However, each airline has individual restrictions depending on various factors including the destination and length of flight. It is important for you to contact your particular airline for the latest information regarding their policies or click the links below.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Recommendations for Domestic Travel

The CDC works in congruence with the top scientists and disease experts in the world. Their recommendations are the groundwork for most guidelines regarding travel. Currently, they recommend delaying all travel until you are fully vaccinated.

Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated Individuals

Fully vaccinated individuals are okay to travel domestically while following all local and state guidelines. While traveling, masks should be worn and social distancing should be in place when appropriate. After traveling, there is no need to test or self-quarantine.

Recommendations for Unvaccinated Individuals

Unvaccinated individuals should avoid traveling if possible per Hawaii travel restrictions and CDC recommendations. If you do travel, take the following steps to ensure the safety of yourself and the people around you:
