If you are visiting Maui and planning a Road to Hanna adventure (a must-do!), you can now visit the Pools of Ohe’o or Ohe’o Gulch (aka the 7 Sacred Pools), which have been closed for nearly two years.
One of the most popular attractions in East Maui, the pools closed in January 2017 after a rock slide injured a visitor. While the area is now open to visitors once again, officials said it can still be dangerous so be cautious during your trip.
To get to the this area of Maui you’ll first need to drive past Hana – yes the road continues. It is about another 10 minute drive (more twists and turns) past the Hana General store; just past mile marker 42. You’ll see a parking lot on your left and a ranger station.
This area of Maui is gorgeous and reminds me of walking through the movie set for Jurassic Park with all the waterfalls. If you do hike along the pools, be careful as flash floods can happen and never dive into a pool without first checking the water depth.
The pools are stunning and great for swimming, as well as cliff diving for the true adventurers in your group. It is part of the Haleakala National Park, so there is a fee to get in. A three- day pass is $15 or $25 for an annual pass. Be sure to check out the volcano, house of the sun, Haleakala.

Up for one more adventure? You can always continue on a few more miles and look for Charles Lindberg’s grave as well. Charles moved to Maui in the late 1960’s and is buried at Palapala Ho’omau Church – a church built in 1857.
