If you’ve ever dreamed of running a marathon with the ocean at your side, palm trees swaying above you, and aloha all around, then the Maui Marathon might just be your dream race.
As locals who live and breathe the beauty of this island — and as owners who welcome guests from all over the world — we’re here to tell you: there’s no better way to experience Maui on foot than by joining this incredible race.
Whether you’re a seasoned runner or simply someone who loves a challenge with a view, here’s what you need to know about this iconic event and how to make the most of it.
1. A Quick Look at the Maui Marathon

Let’s start with a little background. The Maui Marathon has been around since 1971, making it one of the oldest marathons in the U.S. and the longest-running race in Hawaiʻi. And with its gorgeous coastal course and welcoming community vibe, it’s earned a reputation as one of the most scenic marathons in the country.
Event Details:
- Date: Sunday, April 27, 2025
- Start/Finish Location: All events will start and finish in Ka’anapali, in front of the Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort.
- Race Options:
- Full Marathon
- Half Marathon
- 10K Run/Walk
- 5K Run/Walk
Whether you’re training for a PR or looking for a laid-back 5K with views, there’s a place for you here.
2. The Views? Unreal.

Here’s the best part: for much of the course, you’re literally running within 50 feet of the ocean. Think sparkling waves, coastal breezes, and maybe even a honu (sea turtle) sighting if you’re lucky.
- The Full, Half, and 10K courses follow the Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30), an out-and-back stretch with mountains on one side and ocean on the other.
- The 5K is a shorter loop, perfect if you’re looking for something low-key or traveling with family.
Even if you’re not typically a “race person,” we promise: this is one for the memory books.
3. Prepping for Race Day (Island Style)

Running in paradise means prepping a little differently. Here are a few things we always recommend:
Our Best Local Tips:
- Arrive a few days early to acclimate to the warmth and humidity.
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Coconut water is a local favorite for electrolytes.
- Take it easy with your pace. That sunshine can sneak up on you, so give yourself some grace.
- Practice running hills. The course is mostly flat, but a few rollers will keep it interesting.

4. Stay Where the Vibes Match the Views

You’ll be working hard out on the course — so make sure you’re staying somewhere that helps you rest and recharge.
At Wailea Ekahi Village, we offer beautiful beachfront condos in one of Maui’s most serene and scenic areas. It’s the perfect place to unwind before (and after) the big race.
- Enjoy peaceful mornings on your private lanai
- Cook nourishing pre-race meals in a full kitchen
- Soak your muscles in the ocean or pool post-race
- Take in our tropical grounds for a relaxing recovery walk
We love welcoming marathon runners each year and would be honored to host you too.
5. Make a Vacation Out of It

Whether you’re here for the marathon or tagging along with a runner, Maui is made for exploring:
- Relax on nearby beaches like Wailea, Kaʻanapali, or Makena
- Eat like a local — we’ll point you to the best poke bowls and food trucks
- Catch the sunrise at Haleakalā (trust us, it’s worth the early wake-up)
- Take a recovery drive along the Road to Hāna
Maui is a marathon of beauty in itself. Don’t rush it — make time to enjoy it all.
6. Run with Aloha (and Sustainability)
One thing we truly love about the Maui Marathon? It’s making strides toward sustainability.
- The event now uses collapsible, reusable cups at aid stations — less waste, more mindfulness.
- As runners, we always encourage:
- Bringing your own water bottle or belt
- Avoiding litter (even the small stuff counts!)
- Getting involved with local cleanups, like the Honu Hero Program — a great way to give back to the beaches you’re enjoying.
Running with aloha means respecting the island that gives so much to all of us.
7. Final Thoughts
We’ve seen firsthand how special this race is. It brings people together, showcases the best of Maui, and reminds us to slow down and take in the beauty — one step at a time.
So, whether you’re coming for the run, the views, or a little bit of both, we hope this blog has helped you feel more prepared and excited for your Maui Marathon adventure.
