Hawaiian culture is deep-rooted in the water and lands that give the islands life. The ebb and flow of the hills and valleys on Maui are still central to everyday life for the people who call the island home. This gorgeous terrain lays the way for some incredible hikes. In fact, there is a trail for almost everyone that gives you beautiful views of the landscape around you. Keep reading to see the Pauli Family Condos at Wailea Ekahi Village’s recommendations for the best hikes on Maui.
‘A’OHE PU’U KI’EKI’E KE HO’A’O ‘IA E PI’I – No cliff is so tall it cannot be climbed.
First and foremost, we want to give you a few tips to make sure your hike is a success. It is important for you to research any hike before heading out on your adventure.
- Always hike with a partner or group
- Do not leave valuable items, such as your wallet or passport, in your car
- Don’t stray from the designated trails
- Make sure your pack is prepared with essential weather items such as sunscreen, ponchos, bug repellent and a light jacket or sweatshirt
- More remote hikes may not provide reliable cell phone service
- Wear bright clothing so you can be seen by other hikers or in a worst-case scenario, rescuers
Family Friendly
- This trail is perfect for the whole family. With only a slight elevation increase, this 2-mile trail has gorgeous views of both the lush greenery and the deep blues of the seemingly endless ocean. Walk the trail, relax on the beach or have a nature hunt with the kids all on one hike.
- If you’re looking to experience the diversity of Maui, this is the trail for you! As you walk further and further away from the desert-like landscape of Mount Haleakala, you’ll find yourself becoming enveloped in rich vegetation and lush greenery. The trail is only half a mile so it’s something the whole family can enjoy.
Historical Hikes
- The perfect hike for a day trip, this state park features trails that range from half a mile to almost 2 miles. This historic area is home to the infamous ‘Iao Needle and was the site for the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1970. This battle was fought in pursuit of uniting all of the Hawaiian Islands. Due to repairs, some sections of the trail may be closed while repairs are done.
Waterfall Views
- This moderate hike brings a 2-for-1 deal with incredible waterfall views and access to the Seven Sacred Pools or Oheo Gulch. This hike will take you through a four-mile loop that runs through bamboo forests, majestic waterfalls and gentle cool streams that are perfect for a quick dip. Be on the lookout for fresh fruit! Mango and guava trees are known to be along the trail.
- Another hike with gorgeous views is the Waihee Ridge Trail. It’s not a long hike but there is a steady elevation change throughout so this is for the moderate to more experienced hiker. From the summit’s lookout point, you can see Waihee gorge, majestic waterfalls and even some of Hawaii’s other islands off in the distance!
Experienced Hikers
Haleakala – Sliding Sands Trail
- Not for the faint of heart, this trail takes you deep to the valley floor through miles of lava rocks and desert-esque landscapes. Depending on where you start, the summit is known to be cold and windy so be sure to pack extra layers. On extremely clear days, you can even see the big island in the distance from this vantage point! Then, descend over 3,000 feet to the bottom of the crater to capture majestic views that only the volcanoes of Maui can provide.
