What You Need to Know Before Island Hopping in Hawaii
If you want to get the most out of your experience in Hawaii, island hopping is a great way to do it. And although some of the islands are quite close together, some just eight miles apart, there is a lot to see and do on each island. Here are a few things you should consider before committing to inter-island travel:
- You can travel between islands by plane or helicopter ride, taking a ferry, chartering a boat or utilizing an inclusive cruise.
- Each island has its own unique features. We recommend giving yourself ample time to enjoy each island before moving to the next – a minimum of two days per island.
- Costs differ, but for the most common way of travel, by plane, you’ll likely pay around $100 per person.
Flying Between the Islands
Flying is the top choice for most people who want to island hop in Hawaii. It’s a quick and convenient way to see everything that Hawaii has to offer. Though there are a few plane options, the dominant choices are Southwest, Mokulele and Hawaiian Airlines. Most flights last between 25 to 55 minutes depending on the departure and destination islands.
- Southwest Airlines: Travels with flights from Honolulu, Hilo, Kauai, Kona and Maui. It’s important to note that these flights go through Honolulu so if you were looking for something non-stop, Southwest shouldn’t be your first choice.
- Hawaiian Airlines: Offering the best variety of flights, Hawaiian Airlines gives you the option of many direct flights between islands.
- Mokulele Airlines: Featuring smaller turbo-prop planes, Mokulele Airlines flies to the major airports on each island as well as some of the smaller airports.
Take the Ferry Between the Islands
If you find yourself traveling between Maui and Lanai, we recommend trying the ferry! The Expeditions Lanai Passenger Ferry is an hour-long journey that is around $30 per person. With limited departure and return times, be sure to book your trips strategically so that you can get the most out of your time on each island.
Take a Cruise Between the Islands
If you want to get a grand tour of the Hawaiian Islands, we recommend a cruise. Many well-known cruise lines have trips that navigate through the islands and even give you overnight on-land options as well. Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruises offer great cruise options that will give you a great taste of the Islands.
Take a Helicopter Between the Islands
For those looking for a truly unique experience, try taking a helicopter between the islands. There are a few charter companies that will even take you to places you couldn’t get to otherwise! Be aware, you can’t bring luggage with you, and you have to leave the same way you came.
