We might be biased but we truly don’t believe there is a bad time to visit Maui. In fact, we are blessed with mild temperatures and beautiful beaches year-round. But if we had to pick our favorite time of year on the island, it would be spring!
The large winter crowds have all gone back home and they took the higher accommodation prices with them! Typically spring in Hawaii comes with smaller crowds and lower prices so it’s a win-win. Not only that, but some of the best activities and events happen between March and May. Your friends at the Pauli Family Condos at Wailea have come up with a list of some of the best things to do on Maui in the spring.
Activities
Whale Watching – If you arrive early enough in the spring, whale watching is still in full swing! Charter a tour out on the open ocean and see the majestic beauties gracefully glide through the water around you.
Ziplining – If you haven’t seen the great ziplining adventures available on Maui, you are missing out! Glide through the trees high above the forest floor as you take in all of the beauty around you.
Surfing or Stand-Up Paddle Boarding – Most people immediately think of surfing when they think of Hawaii and for good reason! With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world surrounding our island, there isn’t a bad place to be. This spring, try your luck at surfing or opt for a more relaxing stand-up paddle boarding experience.
Scuba – Head under the surface and watch as green sea turtles, eels and tropical fish all swim by. If you’re ready to see a different side of the island, scuba diving is a great way to do it!
Sailing – Glide across the water while taking in all the views around you. Get the best of both worlds as you see the sea life playing in the water and the beachgoers enjoying the land. You can even book tours that include dinner and drinks for you and your guests.
Events
St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) – You might think that a tropical island in the Pacific wouldn’t have much to do when it comes to an Irish holiday, but you would be wrong! There are a few Irish pubs on the island that will make you say “top of the morning to ya!” Check out Mulligans on the Blue or Dog & Duck – both are just down the road from Wailea Ekahi Village.
Celebration of the Arts (April 15-16) – Calling all art and culture lovers! If you want to take a deep dive into the #1 cultural event on Maui, don’t miss the annual Celebration of the Arts. Featuring Hawaiian artisans, educators, cultural practitioners, cooking demonstrations and so much more.
East Maui Taro Festival (April 23) – We talked about how the taro root is a staple in Hawaiian cuisine and we meant it! In fact, it is so central to Hawaiian culture that there is even an entire festival devoted to the veggie. Come see all of the yummy and interesting things the taro root provides to the island at the East Maui Taro Festival.
Maui Steel Guitar Festival (TBD) – Though the festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021, this year the Maui Steel Guitar Festival plans on having a comeback! Learn about the history of the Hawaiian steel guitar and how its music has entertained the ears of people for centuries.
National Park Week (April 16-24) – With an abundance of natural beauty and tons of unique hiking trails, National Park Week on Maui is nothing short of spectacular. Lei Day (May 1) – You may have heard of May Day but on the island, we prefer our own unique twist. Join us on May 1st as we celebrate Lei Day! This statewide celebration shows the love and admiration the Hawaiian people have for the earth around them. Each year, there is a theme for the celebration and in 2022 the theme is Lei Wao Nahele (forest lei) and the corresponding flower is A’ali’i. In addition to this, each island is represented by a different type of lei. Maui’s lei is called the lokilani rose which is a gorgeous pink local bloom.
Maui Brewers Festival (May 15) – Sip, sip hooray! If you’re a lover of brews you’re going to enjoy the annual Maui Brewers Festival. Sample a delicious variety of local and national beers all while raising money for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
